19th December 2004
Greetings in the name of Jesus.
Today we celebrate and give thanks to God for 150 years of Stirling . We are honoured to have community leaders join with us as we remember aspects of the history of this area. This is truly a lovely area in which to live, close to the city but with cooler climate, scenic views, wonderful gardens and native flora and fauna. While the area is rich in natural beauty many of us are unaware of the richness of its history and the heritage we have received from those who have preceded us.
Now we have an opportunity to remember and give thanks for those who pioneered the district, for those that cleared the land, those that built roads, for those that have provided essential services and those that have battled the elements (especially bushfires) to make this community what it is today.
Last week we farewelled Don & Debbie Crook and their son Tim as they left to minister at Goolwa. They have been part of this church for 23 years and relationships and friendships that have been forged over that period are strong and precious and not to be taken for granted. Likewise the heritage we have received from our forebears in this community is strong and precious and we need to be careful not to take it for granted.
As we give praise and thanks to God for all He has provided may we also commit ourselves to contributing in some way to enrich this community and ensure that our children and grandchildren will be blessed by the legacy we leave.
Finally, as we celebrate our local heritage remember at this time of year we also celebrate our spiritual heritage - the gift of God's love for us revealed in Jesus Christ. May His love enrich your life this Christmas and in the future.
God bless,
Penton & Jenny
